I am a foodie to a certain extent, that extent being cost and quality. I can’t generally afford to eat at fancy places, or shop Whole Foods a lot, but do as often as I can. What I eat is important to me. I try to eat healthy, I eat about 90% vegan in the states. My mother is a cooker, my grandmother was a cooker, my great grandmother was a cooker, I am skilled in the kitchen, and have cooked at home and for work. Point being I cook and am very diligent about making my meals as healthy as I possibly can.
Visiting a different country has taught me that I don’t know as much as I think I know, I don’t want to get too political, but the fact is that food in America is garbage, it doesn’t seem to matter to the powers that be that we are basically choosing between poison and poison lite.
I’m angry. The restrictions and quality control of food in Ireland is monitored closely, especially concerning meats and dairy. Food is labeled if it contains GMOs. For example, what you get at McDonald’s in America is not even in the same universe as what you get in Ireland.
I had a nice conversation about this with the owner of a restaurant in Killarney over lunch. I was told that if I came in to a restaurant, ordered a hamburger, I could ask about the meat used in my burger and every restaurant in Ireland could tell you exactly where that beef, chicken, pork, and fish came from..the farm, the area, the tag on the actual animal that it came from, and that 100% grass fed livestock is all that is sold locally, no factory farming in Ireland, the restrictions on dairy are the same, and if you took the train around the country as I did, you’d know this is the case. No additives, no pink mush. Just meat. If you’re American this should make you furious. Why are we not afforded the same quality and choice in the USA. I bet I can answer that, money. Corporate bullshit. Our health has been sold down the river for profit and to special interest groups. Money talks the health of it’s people walks.
I am not trying to be preachy, I swear I’m not, but living in a free country, the freedom to have all the information to make individual choices for ourselves should be at the forefront of our lives. I am by no means promoting McDonald’s, because Ewwww. I went in in the pursuit of science😉, but if you do like their food, you’d do best by eating it in a different country, preferably Ireland. It’s still fattening as hell.
On a side note Guinness in America is poured wrong and tastes like poop. Just a personal opinion.
The food has been amazing, I choose to eat meat while on vacation, and felt good about the quality and origin of that meat. I learned a lot about the food I’m consuming, I’m embarrassed that I hadn’t been as informed in the past. I will not be eating meats or dairy in the USA again, not even once. No thanks, not because of any compassion I may have(which I do), not because of some high ground I’m trying to express, but because I’d like to treat my body well.
Seen at McDonald’s Ireland:
I wrote this in hopes of simply being informative, I hope that it at least inspires someone to check it out, research, be informed about your body and food, and if you don’t care, we’re still free to choose that as well😜
